Especially on the eastern Pest side, a well defined and prepared line of defense was established starting in the fall of 1944. Shown here is a Hungarian MG unit.

BUDAPEST SIEGE: MG on Attila Line

War production continued during the siege, Nov. 1944-Feb. 1945, mainly on Csepel (Che-pel) island, at the huge Weiss-Manfred  manufacturing complex. Here a worker is grinding a crankshaft for a military engine. Of course, their production figures paled by comparison to Russian, US, British, and German quantities.

BUDAPEST SIEGE: War Poduction, 1944-1945

Regent Horthy and his military staff considered the defense of Budapest suicidal for the grand city on the Danube. After his overthrow in October, 1944, the new Arrow-Cross regime of Szalasi agreed with Hitler's firm demand for the defense of the Hungarian capital. Here a Hungarian Honved unit is in the process of building the Attila defense line, probably in late October or early November of 1944.
