The EPK machine gun was designed by EPK, a Greek defense company (in English, "Greek Powder and Cartridge Company", GPCC) later known as Pyrkal.

The gun's creation is connected to EPK's ambitions to become a major producer of infantry weapons. Following a proposal to the Greek government in 1937 the development of a modern machine gun of EPK's own design began, as well as construction of a small number of prototypes in 1939. The whole project, including the building of infrastructure for massive production of the gun, was underway when war with Italy broke out on October 28, 1940, subsequent events prohibited its completion. A total of no more than (probably) 10-15 were built, their fate (except for one given as a present to a member of the Greek Royal Family) remains unknown. Later publications suggested that this 7.92 mm weapon exhibited characteristics at the time closer to those of a submachine gun; others, though, including Pyrkal itself, have argued that the weapon was a very advanced design for its time, featuring pioneering elements of a whole class of future assault rifle. Its construction was close to the Thompson submachine gun with ergonomics and weight compatible with the present day Ultimax 100 light machine gun.

Der Dana M1M-Prototyp wurde erstmals von Tatra Trucks im August 2016 vorgeführt. Das ACS erhielt außerdem ein Zusatzaggregat, ein umfassendes Videokamerasystem, neue Beleuchtungseinrichtungen, ein zentrales Reifendrucküberwachungssystem und verbesserte Hydraulikantriebe. Darüber hinaus wurde vorgeschlagen, ein neues von der tschechischen Firma Retia, die zur tschechoslowakischen Gruppe gehört, entwickeltes Brandschutzsystem sowie in den USA hergestellte GPS-Navigationsgeräte zu installieren.

Far away from home

After escaping the German occupation of Norway, Jan Sigurd Baalsrud fled the country in order to join the British SOE to take the fight to the enemy.

In March 1943, Baalsrud and 11 other commandos were tasked with destroying a German air control tower near Bardufoss, Norway. Upon reaching the coast, the team was betrayed by their resistance contact and the mission compromised.

Forced to swim in the freezing ocean and with the rest of the team either killed or captured in the ambush, Baalsrud was the only one who evaded; beginning his 2 month fight for survival.

Soaking wet and missing one boot, he escaped up into a snow gully, where he shot and killed a German Gestapo officer with his pistol.

Fighting frostbite and snow blindness, he marched across the freezing landscape, evading patrols and fighting the elements. In order to survive, he had to amputate his toes with a pocket knife to stop the spread of gangrene. He also survived an avalanche when he tried to climb a 3000ft mountain.

Nearing death, he was lucky enough to get help from the Norwegian resistance who carried him via stretcher for 27 days across Finland and into neutral Sweden.

Weighing only 80 lbs, he spent 7 months in the hospital and upon returning to England and learning how to walk again, he went back to Norway to fight the Germans until the war's end.

Baalsrud was reunited with his family in Oslo after leaving them for over 5 years and was awarded the St. Olav’s Medal with Oak Branch along with other medals.
