In 1940 Leutnant Franz von Werra was Adjutant of 11./JG 3. He is seen here with the Gruppe mascot 'SIMBA'. Von Werra was later shot down and captured by the British. Hauptmann Franz von Werra. In the Summer of 1941, following his dramatic escape from Canadian captivity, von Werra became Kommandeur of 1./JG 53 in Russia. On October 25, 1941, His aircraft came down in the sea near Vlissingen after developing engine trouble, and von Werra was drowned. He scored a total of 21 kills, including 13 in Russia.
