Hauptmann Franz von Werra. In the Summer of 1941, following his dramatic escape from Canadian captivity, von Werra became Kommandeur of 1./JG 53 in Russia. On October 25, 1941, His aircraft came down in the sea near Vlissingen after developing engine trouble, and von Werra was drowned. He scored a total of 21 kills, including 13 in Russia. In 1940 Leutnant Franz von Werra was Adjutant of 11./JG 3. He is seen here with the Gruppe mascot 'SIMBA'. Von Werra was later shot down and captured by the British.
