Here, on a Caen street, only a few hours ago, Bombardier E.I. Hill was buried where he fell.  He came bringing destruction as the price of liberty, but a young woman of the city brings flowers to his grave.

This is what it is to capture a city.  This is liberation.  Canadian mop-up troops pick their way through the ruins of Caen, alert for snipers, mines, boobytraps, tripwires, falling masonry.  Not much hope of a night on the town here.

A moment of stillness as a dazed prisoner and a combat hardened Canadian soldier take the weight off their feet in the Caen railway station.  For the German the certainty that he would survive the war.  For the Canadian, the uncertainty of what tomorrow may bring.
