This is what it is to capture a city.  This is liberation.  Canadian mop-up troops pick their way through the ruins of Caen, alert for snipers, mines, boobytraps, tripwires, falling masonry.  Not much hope of a night on the town here.

And the earth that protects, receives them at last.  A French farmer, with his wife and daughter tend the freshly dug grave of a Canadian Soldier.  The soldiers head gear is nailed to the cross above his grave.  He was a member of The Canadian Scottish Regiment.  This young man would have come from Vancouver Island off the coast of British Columbia, the home of The Canadian Scottish Regiment.  This French family show the love, and appreciation for his sacrifice.

Here, on a Caen street, only a few hours ago, Bombardier E.I. Hill was buried where he fell.  He came bringing destruction as the price of liberty, but a young woman of the city brings flowers to his grave.
