US-built M3 "General Grant" variant tanks serving with the British 3rd Royal Tank Regiment, Western Desert, March 1942.  In spite of the limited traverse of its sponson-mounted 75 mm main armament, the arrival of the M3 - better armed than any British tank encountered to date, and pretty well armoured for the time - presented the Germans with immediate difficulties. Luftwaffe attack on British merchant shipping in the English Channel, ?June-July, 1940.  Air Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding, commander of RAF Fighter Command, made a strategic decision not to respond to such attacks, concluding (correctly) that they constituted an attempt to draw British fighters into combat with their German adversaries in unfavourable circumstances over the Channel.  Looking forward to the Battle of Britain, a good decision; not such good news for British merchant mariners in the Channel at the time.  Best regards, JR.
