Luftwaffe attack on British merchant shipping in the English Channel, ?June-July, 1940. Air Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding, commander of RAF Fighter Command, made a strategic decision not to respond to such attacks, concluding (correctly) that they constituted an attempt to draw British fighters into combat with their German adversaries in unfavourable circumstances over the Channel. Looking forward to the Battle of Britain, a good decision; not such good news for British merchant mariners in the Channel at the time. Best regards, JR.
