Low-level oblique photograph of four Bristol Blenheim Mark IVs of No. 21 Squadron RAF Detachment based at Luqa, Malta, fly past Linosa Island (one of Pelagie Island)at 50 feet (15 meters) above the Mediterranean Sea while on an anti-shipping strike. At the end of 1941 the No 21 Squadron moved from Great Britain to Malta to attack Italian shipping. The Squadron was disbanded in Malta on 14 March 1942. A No. 37 Squadron Royal Air Force Wellington Mk. X waiting to take off at Tortorella, Southern Italy, holds while a 99th Bombardment Group US Army Air Force B-17 Flying Fortress comes in to land, 1944. The No. 37 was one of the two Squadrons, the other was No. 70, of the RAF’s 231 Wing equipped with Vickers Wellington bombers and based at Tortorella (also known as Foggia No. 2) from winter 1943-1944. Tortorella Airfield, one of Foggia Airfield Complex, was also base of 99th Bombardment Group, US 15th Air Force, equipped with B-17s. Victor Sierra

Mechanics from No. 1 Squadron SAAF prepare to fit a replacement propeller on a Supermarine Spitfire Mark IXE of No. 111 Squadron RAF, parked by a vineyard on the edge of the airfield at Pachino, Sicily, July-August 1943. Moved to Malta in June 1943 to support the invasion of Sicily, No 111 Squadron switched through Italy with the advancing Allied ground forces and remained there until the end of the war, after which it moved to Austria. 269 aircraft were claimed shot down by No 111, making the squadron one of the top RAF scorers for the war.
