US submarine commander scans the surface by periscope - presumably a posed publicity 'photo - 1942.  In some respects, it could be said that the US Navy submarines' tactics were less economical than those of the German u-boats (they would have got through a lot more torpedoes per target, in any case).  However, they were very effective, and inflicted substantial damage on the stretched Japanese supply system in the Pacific.

While the circumstances are not the clearest, it would appear that little &quot;Saipan&quot; was rescued from the island in question in the course of  the invasion/battle during which the New Mexico supplied fire support to US ground forces. 31 December, 1941 - Admiral Chester Nimitz assumes command of the US Pacific Fleet aboard the US Submarine "Grayling".  It appears that the "Grayling" was the only undamaged vessel at hand capable of serving this purpose.  Well, for the US Navy, things could only get better - and they certainly did.  Best regards, JR.
