While the circumstances are not the clearest, it would appear that little &quot;Saipan&quot; was rescued from the island in question in the course of  the invasion/battle during which the New Mexico supplied fire support to US ground forces. US submarine commander scans the surface by periscope - presumably a posed publicity 'photo - 1942.  In some respects, it could be said that the US Navy submarines' tactics were less economical than those of the German u-boats (they would have got through a lot more torpedoes per target, in any case).  However, they were very effective, and inflicted substantial damage on the stretched Japanese supply system in the Pacific.
