Many in Viet Nam looked to Japan as a potential ally in helping to rid their lands of French colonial rule, and thus some were encouraged to form political and para-military organizations that took a pro-Axis stance.

A good example of the hypocrisy in condemning the Japanese as "brutal".
Here, the severed head of a Japanese soldier is put on display by Allied troops. US soldiers in particular were known for their desecration of Japanese war dead. 

It is interesting how everyone is so quick to judge the Japanese, yet fail to look at the actions of soldiers from their own country during the Pacific war...
