Yugoslav French-built Renault FT-17 destroyed in the course of the German invasion of Yugoslavia, 1941.  I could be wrong - but there appears to be a large, neat hole in the near-forward flank.  If so, little survival prospect for the crew.  Best regards, JR.

Old campaigner at the end of the road.

The arrival of the Allies in Sicily and southern Italy coincided with an active volcanic period featuring activity on the part of Mt. Etna and (here) the extremely dangerous Mt. Vesuvius.  Both erupted, engulfing several villages in lava, at this time, occasioning some inconvenience to the Americans operating in the area.  Oh well - at least Vesuvius did not explode, as it has on several occasions in its time.  That could have been very inconvenient, indeed.  This somewhat less than reassuring 'photo of Vesuvius dates from 1944.  Best regards, JR.

Tail of one of 42 Curtiss Tomahawk Mk. IIBs delivered from the RAF’s stocks in Middle East to the Türk Hava Kuvvetleri, Turkish Air Force, on 1942. This aircraft was deployed at Gaziemir, a base of the Ikinci Hava Tumeni (2nd Air Division), HQ Izmir, with two Aircraft Squadrons. The Turkish Air Force received also 24 Kittyhawk I leased to Turkey under the “Lend-Lease Agreement” an deployed at Izmir-Gaziemir by the 3. Tayyare Bolugu (3rd Aircraft Squadron) and 4. Tayyare Bolugu. The life of the Curtiss fighters in Turkey was brief. The aircraft were in poor condition were replaced by the Spitfire Mk.Vs in 1944. Victor Sierra
