The German Justice Department has reopened hundreds of investigations against alledged concentrationcamp guards and other ex-nazis.The reason for this is the recent condemnation of campguard John Djemanjuk.Last may ,the 91 year old Djemanjuk was found guilty for his part in the murder of 28060 Jews in the Sobibor camp where he was a guard. He was the first Nazi to be found guilty without direct proof of his personal involvement.Djemanjuk asked for a new court hearing. The Justice Department will not wait for this appeal and because most of the suspects are over 80 they want to speed up the procedings. So now all the cold cases resembling Djemanjuks are being re-examined.According to Justice officer Kurt Schrimm there are 'less than 1000' possible suspects who are known to be still alive, living in Germany and abroad. The suspects concerned are not only camp guards but also members of 'Einsatzgruppen' and deathsquads eliminating 'undesired elements'. Schrimm wouldn't reveal names but made clear that the Justice Department is awaiting the result of Djemanjuks appeal to start prosecuting suspects.
