A World War II U.S. tank that was part of the 1944 D-Day invasion force that recaptured France was discovered buried under a street at Chartres, 90 km southwest of Paris in 2009.  The M5 Belonged to Company B 31st Tank Bn 7th Armored Division.  Apparently, after being hit by a Panzerfaust in the right track, the crew got out alive, but had to hide for 3 days before getting to the lines of the 23rd Armored Infantry Bn..
After being abandoned the M5 was further demolished by Wehrmacht Engineers before they withdrew from the area. American Engineers bulldozed it into a bomb crater to get it out of the way.

This is the ammo-drum I mentioned a few days ago in my comment on the Belgian SAS photo.This one is a French drum for the Reibel machinegun,produced by MAS(Manufacture d'Armes de Saint-Etienne in France).It was recovered from the bottom of the Dyle river in central Belgium in 1940.The father(a young boy in 1940) of a friend saw retreating troops dumping ammo and gear in the water.Some time later he and some friends dove in the water to retreave things. 65 years later when his father died my friend gave me the drum knowing I'm a collector  of WW1 and WW2 items.I think it contains around 150 bullits.One of the vehicle using this machinegun was the French Panhard Armored car.Greetz,brummbar
