1937 Japan navy flagship in Shanghai.

I have no idea which ship this might be. There is also a Japanese caption which is much longer and I guess it holds more information, but I can't read Japanese. If someone can translate it:

上海沖の海防艦「出雲」(1937年撮影)：日本海軍の第3艦隊(1937年10月以降は支那方面艦隊)旗艦で，排水量1万トン、主砲は20.3cm砲 連装２基４門の旧式艦。上海の日本人居留民保護を目的に，上海の中国軍を砲撃した。

9 August 1937, Lieutenant Isao Ōyama of the Japanese Marines was shot by the Chinese Peace Preservation Corps (a peace keeping force active since the Battle of Shanghai 1932) when he tried to illegally enter the Hongqiao Airport in Shanghai. It is unclear wether Lieutenant Ōyama was ordered to do so or acted at his own.

On August 10, the Japanese Consul General apologized for this incident, as it was clearly a Japanese intrusion into Chinese territory.

Apart from that, he demanded that the Peace Preservation Corps is withdrawn and the Chinese defense works are dismantled. He stated that the shooting of a Japanese officer is seen as humilating for the Japanese army and that every other provocation would have consequences.

The incident caused both the Japanese and the Chinese to deploy more troops to the Shanghai area, the battle started on 13th August 1937.

Ōyama Incident

On 7 Dec 1941, in command of all attacking aircraft over Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, United States, Mitsuo Fuchida flew a Type 97 Model 3 torpedo bomber with the first attack wave as an air observer. In 1952, he toured the United States as a member of the Worldwide Christian Missionary Army of Sky Pilots, which would be the first of his many tours around the world as a missionary; he declared himself to be an &quot;ambassador of peace&quot;. In 1955, he published the book From Pearl Harbor to Golgotha, also known as From Pearl Harbor to Calvary, which focused more so on his faith than military matters, but it was meant to be the subsequent volume to Midway: The Battle that Doomed Japan. He became an American citizen in 1960.
