9 August 1937, Lieutenant Isao Ōyama of the Japanese Marines was shot by the Chinese Peace Preservation Corps (a peace keeping force active since the Battle of Shanghai 1932) when he tried to illegally enter the Hongqiao Airport in Shanghai. It is unclear wether Lieutenant Ōyama was ordered to do so or acted at his own. On August 10, the Japanese Consul General apologized for this incident, as it was clearly a Japanese intrusion into Chinese territory. Apart from that, he demanded that the Peace Preservation Corps is withdrawn and the Chinese defense works are dismantled. He stated that the shooting of a Japanese officer is seen as humilating for the Japanese army and that every other provocation would have consequences. The incident caused both the Japanese and the Chinese to deploy more troops to the Shanghai area, the battle started on 13th August 1937. ----------------------- Evillittlekenny
