Hungarian Forces
A major German-Soviet tank battle was fought in the vicinity of Debrecen, Nagyvarad, and Nyiregyhaza during the fall of 1944, with a total of 1,000 tanks and close to a million men participating. Erroneously also called the Battle of Debrecen or the Battle of Hortobagy, it was fought on the broad Hungarian plain (puszta). The Axis saved three of its armies here by burning through a roadblock thrown up by the Soviets and thus they were able retreat toward the west. But Malinovsky kept the puszta. An armored column and burning tanks are shown.
