A major German-Soviet tank battle was fought in the vicinity of Debrecen, Nagyvarad, and Nyiregyhaza during the fall of 1944, with a total of 1,000 tanks and close to a million men participating. Erroneously also called the Battle of Debrecen or the Battle of Hortobagy, it was fought on the broad Hungarian plain (puszta). The Axis saved three of its armies here by burning through a roadblock thrown up by the Soviets and thus they were able retreat toward the west. But Malinovsky kept the puszta. Cavalry units were used by most European armies and despite popular perceptions, these forces could still be very useful, like the Soviet General Pliyev's cavalry units.

The Red Army not only sent most of the Axis POW's back to the USSR for the purpose of forced labor, but it also rounded up tens of thousands on civilians and shipped them to the East for manual labor -- mines, factories, forests, and farms.  Most were returned after 3-4 years, if they had survived.
