During a spring snowfall in the Carpathian Mountains, Polish and Hungarian officers celebrate a common frontier established during March, 1939. On our left is Hungarian general Bildy and the location is Verecke, a famous mountain pass between the two friendly countries.

Horthy (on our far left) and his retinue visit the city of Munkacs while inspecting the newly recovered province of Karpatalja. On the hill stands an ancient Hungarian castle and the new buildings on the ground level had been constructed before 1939 for the occupying Czech army.

Three Polish and two Hungarian soldiers are present at the moment the Hungarian flag is planted at the newly established frontier.  The common frontiers had some strategic importance, but even more so a psychological one. In any case, around 140,000 Polish refugees were able to cross over to Hungary in the fall of 1939.
