This undated photo (probably 1942) shows the burial of Hungarian soldiers who perished on the Russian Front. Judged by the appearance of the caskets and headcrosses with names, this was not a mass funeral. There must have been ample time to make it solemn. May they R.I.P. far from home...

On the Russian Front

Discipline in the Honved army was stiff, which sometimes proved to be effective, or sometimes it would backfire. Here a Hungarian officer is presenting his views to a group of his soldiers. But discipline was hurt not only by an unpopular cause, other than defense, but also by the social divisions still plaguing Hungary then. The officers were classy "gentlemen" and the soldiers just "common folk."

From the Protestant village of Hajdubagos, the portrait of a young Hungarian soldier Karoly Bakos, who served in the army during WW2. His Hajdu county region is named after the intrepid young men of the past, called the "hajdu" (haay-doo), who used to offer their fighting skills to noble estates and free cities, like Debrecen, in return for financial compensation. One wonders if this "milky faced kid" ever made it back home.
