Memoirs starkly describe the incredible horror of the Russian roads leading back from the collapsed Don front. In temperatures dipping into 30-40 degrees below, the freezing,  hungry, worn out, and wounded Hungarian and other Axis soldiers collapsed by the roadside, and froze to death in minutes, as shown in the photo above, in January, 1943.

Somewhere behind the front, recovering Honved soldiers, and their nurses and  doctors,  gather for some sort of occasion, in the gymnasium of a military hospital, which appears to be a peacetime school building.
