Initially known as the Hornisse (Hornet) the Nashorn (Rhinoceros) tank destroyer was intended as an interim measure. It proved to be one of the most successful vehicles of its kind, however. The soldier posing on this captured and rather battered Nashorn gives a good idea of the size of the vehicles powerful (88mm) gun. The rear decking and side armor appear to have been removed. The Elefant was extremely heavy and slow. This meant that in practice it was better suited to the role of assault Gun than that of Tank Destroyer. Most were used in Russia. The Elefant had a powerful 88mm Gun. (scanned by HOS Bandit)
