Stiff upper lip ...

Airmen in tropical dress work on the Allison engine of a Lend-Lease Curtiss Tomahawk for the RAF in a makeshift hangar, perhaps at Takoradi, Gold Coast, today Ghana. The aircraft is likely one of the single-engine fighters shipped from USA in crates on board of merchant ships and reassembled in Western Africa before the ferry to Egypt. Victor Sierra

Captain Bernard Law Montgomery, the future Field-Marshal, aged about 27-28, during WW1.  Montgomery served through the war, and was wounded several times.  The collar tabs indicate that this photo was taken some time in 1915 or early 1916, during which time Montgomery held Staff posts.  Best regards, JR.
