The section leader peels off from formation in this image showing F4U-1 Corsairs of Fighting Squadron (VF) 12 in flight on March 23, 1943. VF-12 was the first Navy squadron to receive the "Bent Wing Bird" title.



Fighting Squadron VF-12 

An American dive bomber SBD-5 "Dauntless" from the No. 22 Squadron (VC-22) landing with the arrestor hook extended. Since the end of 1943, No. 22 Squadron was based on the aircraft carrier USS Independence (CVL-22).
The SBD ("Scout Bomber Douglas") was the U.S. Navy's main carrier-borne scout plane and dive bomber from mid-1940 through mid-1944.

SBD-5 "Dauntless"

Aircraft carrier USS Hornet, (CV-8). During World War II in the Pacific Theater, she launched the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo and was the last US fleet carrier ever sunk by enemy fire.
