This damage was received during the Battle of Cape Esperance, 12 October 1942. It was caused by a shell that struck the face of turret # 3 and detonated on impact. The explosion was about thirty feet away from the damage seen here.

Japanese 20cm (8") armor-piercing shell stuck in the six-inch class "A" armor of barbette # 1. Photographed at the Philadelphia Navy Yard in November 1942. The base fuze has been removed.
This shell hit just below the forward gun turret during the Battle of Cape Esperance, 12 October 1942. It was broken open and stopped with its base just inside the outer surface of the armor. The shell did not explode, but filled the turret with smoke and jammed it in train. The turret was then abandoned, with eleven men escaping before the turret burned out as a result of fires set by another shell that hit below the waterline and set the ship's forward magazines afire.
