Petty Officer 1st Class Cesar Romeo (later Chief Petty Officer) aboard the  Coast Cuard manned assault transport  USS Cavalier. He said he prefered to serve with the enslited crew and turned down an opportunity for a commission.

Movie star Victor Mature enlisted in the Coast Guard Reserve (Temporary Class) in 1942.  Honorably discharged, he re-enlisted in the regular Coast Guard the next day.  He did 11 months of convoy duty in the North Atlantic, rose to the rating of Chief Boatswain's mate, then toured America in the Spar's recruiting show, Tars and Spars.
