Five German soldiers who survived

American communications corporal David Balberg poses at a road sign in Valognes, north-western France, in front of a sign for directions to Cherbourg (20 km north) and Montbourg (8 km south). On the sleeve of the corporal's jacket is the patch of a signal outfit. The corporal is armed with a Thompson M1 submachine gun, with a magazine for 30 rounds.
