A destroyed German self-propelled gun smolders along the road leading from Neuville-au-Plain to Sainte-Mère-Église. Private John E. Atchley, H Company, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, was credited with destroying the assault gun with a 57mm antitank gun - the first time he had ever fired one. His courageous stand caused the Germans to halt their armored counter-attack against Sainte-Mère-Église, Normandy, France; June 1944.
