2nd Lieutenant Margaret Stanfill (1920-2006), from the 128th American field hospital, a member of the Army Nurse Corps, was the first American nurse to set foot on French soil. Three hours after reaching the beachhead, she was at work. - Here, she prepares a workstation on June 14, 1944 in the Norman commune of Boutteville, 8 miles north of Carentan, north-west France.
