Filipino women, assisted by American troops, leave the Santa Clara Monastery where they had taken shelter from the brutal fighting during the Battle of Manila. All the men who were in the monastery had been taken away by Japanese troops to Fort Santiago and the Palacio del Gobernador air raid shelter and brutally executed. The month long battle was a bloodbath for the residents of Manila. By it's end an estimated 100,000-500,000 civilians had died, most as a result of massacres by the Japanese and artillery bombardment by the Americans. The city itself was almost completely destroyed, the scene of the worst urban fighting in the Pacific Theater. Intramuros, Manila, Luzon, Philippines. March 1945.
