M3 medium tanks on parade, Fort Knox, 1942. The limitations of the M3 are often noted. However, this was not the perspective of the Germans when it arrived on the North African battlefield. The "Lee/Grant's" 75mm gun was the most powerful tank gun on the battlefield at that time, and the 8th Army used it effectively, despite the "disadvantage" of having its main armament mounted in a side-sponson, WW1-style. The M3 was superseded by the M4 "Sherman", but continued to give valuable service in the Far East. Best regards, JR.
