This is a remarkable, kinetic photograph taken by Fred Ramage in Cherbourg while pockets of resistance were cleared after D-Day. Ramage's back was dangerously toward the German position. Note the soldier at the left holding his pistol while jumping over a corpse as his comrades walk. The dead German was manning a Solothurn S-18/1000 20mm antitank rifle. Of the two rifles visible on the ground, the one nearest the German has its bolt open, suggesting he was killed as he tried to chamber a round.
