My Grandfather, Curtis H. Larson with 3rd Cav., Task Force Polk, 3rd Cav Rcn Sqn. He was Platoon Sgt. when they hit the beach and later commanded one of the platoons in A Troop (battlefield promotion at Trier) after his Lt (1st Lt. Phillip Eddy) was killed on a recon patrol across the river. 
Here he is in Austria as a 2nd Lt. platoon commander using a pair of captured Zeiss binocs (which I now have).  Grandpa also was unique in that he sported a handlebar mustache while in 3rd Army.  His Captain and Lt. Col protected the mustache from visiting rank.  :)
