Frank Buckles,born 1901,read about the war and lied about his age to join the military.In 1917 the 16 year old Frank joined the war in Europe as a medic(ambulance man).Just before the war's end he was promoted corporal.After the war he joined the merchand navy.
During WW2 he  was taken prisoner by the Japanese on the Phillipines.He was a POW for three years before being freed by his fellow Americans.
