Gone are the klieg lights and make-up of the movie lot; in their place, there appears fierce sunlight of the upper air and a face that bespeaks a fighting man's determination.  When Jimmy Stewart went to war, he went the whole way.

Lew Ayres made news in 1942 when he was sent to a conscientious objectors camp.  Later he served honorably in the Army Medical Corps in the Philippines.

A few days after the 1941 Academy Award dinner where Jimmy Stewart was awarded the Oscar for Best Actor in The Philadelphia Story.  Civilian Stewart was sworn into the Army with 18 other inductees.  About 100 loyal fans, mostly women, gathered to give him a send-off.  His arrival at the draft board produced two characteristic lines:  "Hullo" - and then, with a sleepy grin, "Uh, it's a little early in the morning."
