G Company, 10th US Cavalry Brigade, parade at Fort Riley, Kansas, April 1942. The US Army started WW2 with 2 horsed cavalry divisions (1st and 2nd), 2 horse-drawn artillery regiments, and 2 mixed horse and motor transport regiments. Total authorised equine establishment was 16,800 horses and 3,500 mules. By 1943, ongoing mechanisation of the Army had largely eliminated the horse element; by the end of the war, only a handful of horses was being taken up by the US armed forces. Best regards, JR.
