Generals Eisenhower, Bradley and Patton inspect suitcases filled with silver and gold at the Merkers Mine, Thuringia, Germany on 12 April, 1945. The gold and monetary reserves of the Reichsbank in Berlin were moved there in early February after the destruction of the Reichsbank by Allied bombing. Also found in the mine were many priceless works of art and much gold, silver and gemstones looted from concentration camp inmates by the SS.
