Heavy flak.

US Army Air Force.

Formation of B-17 Flying Fortress bombers encounter heavy, high-level flak over Germany. While the arrival of the long-range Mustang single-engine fighter made daylight bombing of German targets at least practicable (since it provided a foil for German day fighters) well-placed high-level antiaircraft opposition remained a significant danger for Allied heavy bombers by day or by night. "Well directed" rather than "accurate"; this form of defence relied on mass fire and "carpet" explosions rather than any notion of individual accuracy. Best regards, JR.
