Ole Eagle Eye" "Ole Eagle Eye": a North American A-36A Apache of the USAAF’s 27th Fighter Bomber Group in the Naples area, probably November 1943-February 1944, during refueling through hand pump with the gasoline out of 55 gallon drums. At the beginning a medium bomber unit with Douglas A-20, re-designated as the 27th Fighter-Bomber Group and reequipped with the A-36 Invader the 27th was assigned to Korba, Tunisia, and flew its first combat missions on 6 June 1943 spending the rest of the conflict in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations (MTO). During the Sicilian Campaign, the 27th FBG flew missions for the reduction of Pantelleria and Lampedusa Islands and supported the Allied ground forces during the conquest of Sicily. Afterwards the 27th FBG flew missions covering to Allied landing at Salerno on September 1943 and later in support to the Fifth Army during the Allied drive toward Rome. On May 1944 was transformed in fighter unit, re-designated 27th Fighter Group and equipped with Curtiss P-40 later replaced by Republic P-47 Thunderbolt. Victor Sierra
