This Spitfire Vc of 2nd Fighter Squadron (The American Beagle Squadron), 52nd Fighter Group, 12th Air Force, USAAF, crashed in emergency landing for engine troubles at Pianosa Island, in Tuscan Archipelago, 13 January 1944,
while returning at its base, Borgo, Corsica, after an armed reconnaissance in couple with another Spitfire of same unit over Toscana. The pilot managed to escape unhurt and was take POW by German troops. Note in the photo a German soldier standing in front of aircraft. Victor Sierra

Crash landing in Tuscan Archipelago

In the years of WW2 many aircraft of Axis and Allied forces
landed or crashed in Swiss territory because or unables at to go in base due to damages or technical troubles or, simply, defection. In this photo an USAAF "Flying Fortress", the B-17F serial number 42-30233, code QW-V, of 336th Bomb Squadron, 95th Bombardment Group, based in England, landed in Swtizerland, at Altenrhein Airport, on the 13 April 1944 because Flak damages during a missione over Germany.  After landing the aircraft and its crew were interned in Switzerland. Note the Swiss markings affixed at the aircraft later returned to USAAF on the 27 August 1945.  
On the 13 April 1944, in addition to this plane, eight other American bomber (B-17 and B-24) landed in Switzerland, while a B-17G crashed at Siebnen. Victor Sierra

Spitfire Mk IX of 307th Fighter Squadron, 31st Fighter Group, 15th Air Force, USAAF, standing at Montecorvino Airfield, near Salerno, Italy, Autumn 1943. From Montecorvino the activity of Spitfires of 31st FG consisted mostly of flying patrols over the Salerno beaches after the landing. The Spitfires of 31st FG were Mk.Vb, Mk.VIII and Mk.IX like the plane of the photo. In the course of 1944 the British-built fighter of 31st FG were replaced by Mustang, P-51B and P-51D. Victor Sierra
