This B-24 was hit on September 7,1944 during a raid on German installations in Austria.German fighter resistance was fierce,downing all of the attacking Liberators except for the one from which this photograph was taken.

A P-47 is silhouetted by the explosion of an ammunition truck.Pilots got a particular satisfaction from a good secondary but there were risk here too,flying debris and the blast concussion itself could down the attacking fighter.In this case,the Thunderbolt flew through the blast and safely returned to base.
