Foothold on Leyte

US Army Photo**

American soldiers shielded by a Landing Vehicle Tracked (LVT-4) and an M4A2 Sherman tank, contemplate their next move on the Philippine island of Leyte. The largest use of LVTs was in the Leyte landing in October 1944, with nine U.S. Army amtrac and two amtank battalions deployed by the U.S. 6th Army. These U.S. Army LVTs were later used in other Philippine islands landings.
