An M4A1 of C Company and two M18 Hellcats of the 701 th TD Battalion attemp to tow a disabled M4A1 up  a hill on december 11th 1944.The location was near a forward observation post and was under direct observation by the Germans.The winter of 44/45 was unusually harsh.And for every mountain or hill climbed in Italy ,an even taller one appeared ahead.The mountanious terrain of Italy made offensive operations extremely difficult.Tankers used to say
"It's just on the other side of that mountain"...

A  M4A3 from B company provides support for doughboys of the 350th Infantry Reg on the road to Feltre.The Piave river is on the right,and the Alps are straight ahead.Note the 5 spent 76mm shell casings on the road and in the ditch.This photo was taken on May 1st 1945,the day before the war ended in Italy.This tank is equipped with duckbill end connectors to provide better 'flotation' on soft ground.Several connectors  have broken off.Greetz,brummbar
