The Soviet 4th Mechanised Corps (Gen. Vasily Timofeyevich Volsky) from the S and the 4th Tank Corps (Gen. Andrey Grigoryevich Kravchenko) from the N, join hands at Kalach on the Don, thus establishing the complete encirclement of the 300,000 men of 6. Armee (General der Panzertruppen Friedrich Paulus) and 4. Panzer-Armee (Generaloberst Hermann Hoth). The Soviets report gains of up to 80 km (50 miles) S of Stalingrad.
