Lluís Companys i Jové was the 123th President of the Generalitat de Catalunya from 1934 to 1940. He was member of ERC (Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya), an independentist and republican political party of Catalunya created in 1931. He was the last president of the Generalitat after the occupation of Catalunya by the rebel and fascist troops of Franco. He escaped to France after the fall of Barcelona in the February 23 of 1939 with more people (like the President of the II Spansih Republic, Manuel Azaña). Then, he moved to Brittany and lived there because he wanted to have contact with his family members that couldn't escape from Catalonia. Some days after the fall of France (exactly in August 23th) he was arrested by members of the Gestop, who deported him to the newest fascist regime of Spain. In Madrid, he was acused of being the President of the Generalitat de Catalunya , Minister of the Spanish Republic and for the events happened in Catalunya. Also, he was tried of joining the military rebellion (it's ironic that the authentic rebels said that the pro-Republican were rebels). Some days ago, in October 15th, he was executed in the Castle of Montjuïc (Barcelona) by an illegal council of war. His last words were: "Assassineu un home honrat. Per Catalunya!" and: "Tornarem a lluitar, tornarem a patir, tornarem a vèncer!". Translation: "You're killing a honest man. For Catalonia!" and "We will fight again, we will suffer again, and we will win again!" The President Lluís Companys i Jové is known because it's the only president of a democratic nation and elected by the people that was tried and executed. Today, in 2011, his illegal trial is still being accepted by the Spanish government and it seems that nothing is going to change.
