When the war started in 1937, Japan quickly overran North China. Plans were made to create then an autonomous buffer zone between unoccupied China and Manchukuo in the form of a collaborationist regime. Wang Kemin accepted the post of the President of the "Provisional Government of the Republic of China", the capital being in Beijing. The fact that every step was closely monitored by Japanese Authorities discredited the Wang Kemin government in the eyes of the locals. The Provisional Government of the Republic of China was merged into Wang Jingwei's Nanjing Nationalist Regime on 20 March 1940, but stayed practically independent under the name "North China Political Council", of which Wang Kemin was the chairman until the end of the war. Wang Kemin became furthermore the Internal Affairs Minister of the Wang Jingwei Regime. After the surrender of Japan, Wang Kemin was arrested by the Republic of China and tried for treason. He committed suicide before the conclusion of his trial on December 26, 1945. ------------------------------- Evillittlekenny
