Today divers started the biggest salvage operation ever in British waters. In 2008 a German bomber shot down during the Battle of Britain, was located in 15 m of water before the coast of Kent in the south-east of England.Sonar identified the wreck as being a Dornier Do-17Z.The Luftwaffe airplane is in a remarkable good condition, the tyres of the landinggear are still inflated but the props tell about the sustained damage. The cockpit is partially covered in algae. For now the divers will built a kind of cage around the wreck before attempting the raise it.The operation will last 3 weeks. The discovery of the 'Flying Pencil' is of national and international importance according to Peter Dye,director of the RAF museum, because it's the soul survivor of the battle. The final goal is to exhibit the Dornier in a museum,to 'shed a light on the sarcifices of young men of both the British and German airforces and those of other countries involved in WW2'.
