FG42: developed specifically to give the Fallschirmjäger (airborne forces) increased firepower over standard Heer issued small arms. Developed after the near Pyrrhic Victory on Crete where German paratroops suffered horrendous casualties--in part because they found their weapons scattered in canisters after the initial drops and often lacking in terms of combat performance. However, while the FG42 was effective, it was also heavy and difficult to control like all period automatic rifles and suffered from teething problems. Thus, it never achieved wide scale production nor issue, but remains an interesting side note in WWII firearms production...
