Blast from the past - Renault FT-17.

Musee de l\'Armee, Brussels

A WW1 (1917) design, the first "true" tank; completely obsolete by 1939, yet - in geographical terms - one of the most widely used tanks of WW2, with its employment ranging from France in the West by way of Syria and Palestine, all the way over to Indo-China. This particular machine is preserved in the Musee de l'Armee, Brussels, and is an old friend of mine. I have spent many a lunchtime in this museum, although I have not had the chance to visit for some time. One point I recall about this machine, although I may be mistaken. The disc shield of the drive wheel (front) appeared to be made of wood, something that certainly was not true of all FT-17s. Can any of our Belgian friends (?Brummbar) comment, or correct me on this ? Best regards, JR.
