German cemetery (Crete)

Neutral

The German Military Cemetery near Maleme (13.1.2011). In the distance one can see the famous Maleme airfield around which so many of this man died. 4465 german casualties are buried here, most died on the 20.5.1941, some as late as 9.7.1945, this last ones probably killed by locals after the surrender, since the german prisioners were allowed to wander about freely the locals took the opportunity to take revenge and many german soldiers were murderer this way. A curiosity: Chania (or Xania),which the germans called fortress Crete, held to the end and only surrendered on the 9th May 1945.
